Deadlock may have been occurring with the old connection pool.  Let's see how this plays with Bitronix, should be fine.

 CustomConnectionProvider.java v1.3 <http://ziptie.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/org.ziptie.zap.hibernate/src/org/ziptie/zap/hibernate/internal/CustomConnectionProvider.java?revision=1.3&view=markup>  curious problem with inability to get a connection under load; removed synchronized on getConnection() here, thus deferring to the underlying Bitronix locking mechanisms, and the problem is gone.  not really sure under what circumstances a deadlock was happening...
